Postdoctoral Researcher – BioProtect: The University of Galway invites applications for a full-time, fixed-term position at the level of Postdoctoral Researcher. The successful candidate will be part of a team working in the Horizon EU Mission Ocean and Waters Project – BioProtect. BioProtect aims to co-develop and demonstrate area-based solutions for biodiversity protection and restoration in marine and coastal ecosystems. The project includes 18 partners and demonstration sites in Norway, Iceland, Ireland, northern Portugal, and the Azores Islands.

Eligibility/Qualification

Essential Requirements:

  • PhD in marine biology, statistics, data science, or a related discipline
  • Record of publication in relevant disciplines
  • Strong background in data analysis, including quantitative research approaches
  • Excellent research, communication, project management, and teamwork skills
  • Motivated self-starter with a strong work ethic

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience with multivariate techniques, spatial modeling, and programming skills in R
  • Familiarity with GIS tools and spatial analyses
  • Strong knowledge exchange skills for non-academic audiences
  • Experience with content creation for professional social media and websites

Job Description

The postdoctoral researcher will work under the supervision of Drs. Oisin Callery and Anthony Grehan in Galway and Dr. Julian Burgos at MFRI in Iceland. Responsibilities include:

  • Compiling data on marine species, habitats, and human pressures in Irish and Icelandic waters
  • Applying and adapting workflows for systematic conservation planning (SCP) and ecological restoration planning (ERP)
  • Identifying ecological corridors for fish, marine mammals, and seabirds
  • Deploying and testing the “BioProtect Marine Planner” for co-design of marine protected areas (MPAs)
  • Writing reports and research papers for top-tier publications
  • Contributing to funding applications and proposal development
  • Engaging with local, national, and international stakeholders
  • Attending and presenting at conferences and project meetings
  • Supporting events, seminars, and workshops related to the project
  • Fulfilling management and reporting requirements of the project

  • Year 1 (Ireland): €44,846 – €57,332 per annum (IUA Postdoctoral Researcher Salary Scale)
  • Years 2 & 3 (Iceland): Salary according to the Icelandic Postdoctoral Researcher agreement
