Postdoctoral Researcher – GLOSSAM: The University of Galway invites applications for a full-time, fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher within the discipline of Classics. This position, funded by the Irish Research Council, is part of the Global and Local Scholarship on Annotated Manuscripts (GLOSSAM) project directed by Dr. Pádraic Moran. The project aims to enhance our understanding of reading, education, scholarship, and knowledge transfer in the pre-modern world by studying glosses, the paratexts transmitted between lines and margins of manuscript books.

Job Description:
The successful candidate will explore the application of Data Science methods, particularly Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Deep Learning, to the analysis of historical texts, focusing on glosses from manuscripts of the eighth and ninth centuries AD. Duties include:
- Producing statistical analyses for texts in the Gloss Corpus, with suitable visualizations.
- Applying semantic word embeddings for Latin and other historical languages.
- Assisting in the development of web applications for semantic search and text similarity.
- Applying sentence or document embeddings to entire glosses and analyzing semantic overlap.
- Assisting in the development of the Gloss Corpus web resource.
- Collaborating with the project team, presenting research results, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
- Other duties as assigned.
Eligibility Requirements:
Essential Requirements:
- PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, or related field.
- Advanced skills in Python, databases, and data visualization.
- Advanced skills in NLP tasks including word and sentence embeddings, transformers, multilingual models, transfer learning, and text clustering.
- Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Desirable Requirements:
- Experience with NLP tasks for historical and/or under-resourced languages.
- Experience in web application development, preferably using Python web application frameworks such as Django or Flask.
- Previous peer-reviewed publications.
- Experience working on collaborative, multidisciplinary research projects.
