Postdoctoral Researcher in Accelerator Physics: The European Spallation Source (ESS) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher in Accelerator Physics to contribute to the design work on the accumulator and compressor rings for a future Muon facility. This position is a collaboration between ESS and Uppsala University’s FREIA laboratory. The successful candidate will work with experienced researchers and scientific staff from ESS, FREIA, and CERN, gaining broad experience in accelerator physics, magnet technologies, and radio-frequency technologies. This is a fixed-term position for two years, based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden, with frequent visits to Uppsala University.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Doctoral degree in physics or a related area
  • Experience in accelerator physics, preferably with beam dynamics of high intensity and space charge dominated beams
  • Ability to perform independent research, demonstrated through publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or presentations at important conferences in the accelerator domain
  • Solid knowledge of particle tracking and beam optics codes (knowledge of programming and data analysis using Python, MatLab, MadX, Orbit, or other lattice/ring design codes is beneficial)
  • Strong academic writing skills and ability to document workflows clearly and effectively
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset

Job Description: In this role, you will work on the design of accumulator and compressor rings for a Muon Collider as part of an EU-funded project. You will perform beam dynamics studies, compare existing and proposed proton and ion rings, conduct design and beam dynamics simulations, and document your work through academic articles and technical reports. You will collaborate with researchers and staff from ESS, FREIA, and CERN, gaining valuable experience in accelerator physics, magnet technologies, and radio-frequency technologies.
