Postdoctoral Researcher in Cheminformatics: BASF SE is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Postdoctoral Researcher to join our global team in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. The successful candidate will develop and apply Large Language Models (LLMs) to predict molecular properties, focusing on toxicological effects. This role involves interdisciplinary collaboration with experts from cheminformatics, computational chemistry, data science, and academia.

Eligibility / Qualification:

Mandatory Skills:

  • PhD in Cheminformatics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Expertise in machine learning techniques for small molecule property prediction or related tasks.
  • Proficiency in Python programming, including the use of libraries such as scikit-learn along with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills in English.
  • Demonstrable experience with functions, classes, program structuring, and pipeline-building.

Optional Skills:

  • Prior experience with Large Language Models (LLMs) and their architectures.
  • Knowledge of toxicology and its applications.
  • Advanced programming capabilities or software development expertise (e.g., version control, CI/CD pipelines, Docker, FastAPI, high-performance computing).
  • Familiarity with RDKit as a cheminformatics library.
  • German language proficiency is a plus.

Job Description:

As part of BASF SE in the Group Research department, you will:

  • Collaborate with a motivated, interdisciplinary team of scientists including cheminformaticians, data scientists, and computational chemists.
  • Work on developing and applying LLMs to predict molecular properties, specifically toxicological effects.
  • Create and optimize pipeline systems for compiling datasets from both public and proprietary sources to advance molecular property prediction tools.
  • Expand your research scope to include small molecules, polymers, quantum chemistry, or related areas based on expertise and interest.
  • Innovate solutions to enhance our capabilities in cheminformatics, ultimately contributing towards BASF’s sustainability transformation.
