The Department of Physics at the University of Jyväskylä is seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to work on theory projects within the Centre of Excellence in Quantum Materials (QMAT). The research will be guided by Professor Tero Heikkilä and Research Fellow Stefan Ilić at the Condensed Matter Theory group.
| Designation | Postdoctoral Researcher |
| Research Area | Condensed Matter Theory / Quantum Materials |
| Location | University of Jyväskylä, Finland |
| Duration | Fixed term of 2 years (with possible extension to a third year) |
| Application Deadline | November 1, 2026 |
Job Description
The project investigates mesoscopic phenomena arising from the interplay of superconductivity with other correlated states and orders, focusing on electrical, radio-frequency, and optical responses. The theoretical framework will primarily utilize Keldysh path-integral and nonequilibrium Green-function methods, complemented by numerical approaches based on tensor networks.
Major responsibilities include:
- Conducting basic research to advance the understanding of quantum engineered materials.
- Developing and applying theoretical and computational methods for correlated quantum materials.
- Utilizing computational facilities such as the University of Jyväskylä cluster or the national scientific computing centre (CSC).
- Publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at international conferences.
Research Directions
Specific research areas may include, but are not limited to:
- Cavity effects on superconductivity.
- Superconducting LEDs and other superconductor–semiconductor hybrid devices.
- Ferroelectric Josephson junctions.
- Interplay of superconductivity with multiferroics and textured magnets.
- Parafermion physics arising from the coupling of superconductors to fractional quantum Hall edge states.
Eligibility & Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A doctoral degree in physics or a related field with a thesis on a theoretical topic (must be completed before the starting date).
- A strong foundation in condensed matter physics, quantum physics, and statistical mechanics.
- High proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Assets: Knowledge of Keldysh field theory, quasiclassical Green’s functions, tensor network methods (MPS, PEPS), or the theory of superconductivity and ferroelectricity.
What We Offer
- Salary: Approximately €3,600–€4,800 per month (gross), depending on experience.
- Relocation Support: Assistance for candidates moving to Finland from abroad.
- Work Environment: Access to an international community, professional development, and the high standard of living offered in Finland.
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted through the university’s recruitment system. Ensure your ORCID profile is up to date and visible to the public. Please include the following documents in English as PDF files:
- A Curriculum Vitae (CV) following scientific practice templates.
- An informal motivation/cover letter (maximum 2 pages) detailing research interests and career goals.
- A numbered list of all scientific publications.
- Relevant degree certificate (highest degree).
