Postdoctoral Researcher in Evolutionary Behavioral Ecology: We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join the research group of Ulrika Candolin at the University of Helsinki. The project focuses on “Coping with light pollution: integrating behavioral, physiological, and genetic research in the study of the European glow-worm.” The aim is to determine the impact of light conditions on organisms’ ability to cope with modern LED lights, using the glow-worm as a model species. The research will involve integrating behavioral, physiological, and genetic approaches to understand the responses of glow-worms to artificial light and identify measures to reduce negative effects on species and biodiversity.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Ph.D. degree in a relevant field (recently obtained, within approximately seven years before starting the project)

  • Familiarity with studying the effects of light conditions on organisms, preferably in the context of light pollution

Job Description:

  • Conduct research to investigate the impact of light conditions (natural and artificial) on the ability of the European glow-worm to cope with modern LED lights.
  • Integrate behavioral, physiological, and genetic research approaches to assess the responses of glow-worms to LEDs along latitudinal, urbanization, and temporal gradients.
  • Perform experimental work to analyze behavioral and physiological responses of glow-worms to artificial light.
  • Screen for signs of selection across the genome to understand the genetic underpinnings of the glow-worms’ responses to artificial light.
  • Use the research findings to predict population trajectories under future light pollution scenarios and suggest changes to artificial lighting systems to minimize negative effects on biodiversity.
  • Publish research results in international scientific journals.
  • Collaborate with the research team, participate in research discussions, and contribute to the overall project goals.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in the field and attend relevant conferences and workshops.
