Genomic Epidemiology of Tuberculosis and Zoonotic Mycobacterial Diseases

Location:
IRTA-CReSA, Bellaterra, Barcelona, Spain

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD in infectious disease epidemiology, genetics, microbiology, or a related life science discipline.
  • Strong background in genomics and bioinformatics or epidemiological data analysis and statistical inference.
  • Motivation to work in epidemiological surveillance, zoonotic pathogens, and the One Health approach.
  • Ability to conduct self-directed research from hypothesis generation to testing.
  • Experience in microbiology and molecular biology techniques is preferred.
  • Willingness to work in a high biocontainment level (BSL-3) lab, if needed.
  • A relevant scientific record for applying to open competitive postdoctoral calls.

Job Description:
The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team led by Dr. Bernat Pérez de Val to work on projects related to genomic epidemiology of TB and other mycobacterial diseases. Key responsibilities include:

  • Using NGS data from mycobacterial isolates for phylogenomic and spatiotemporal epidemiology research.
  • Conducting genome-level phylodynamic analysis, studying transmission events, host transitions, and molecular clocks.
  • Identifying genetic polymorphisms to predict antimicrobial resistance.
  • Contributing to research on vaccines, diagnostics, and epidemiology of zoonotic TB in both livestock and wildlife interfaces.
