Job Description
The research project focuses on nanostructured quantum materials, including topological systems, atomically thin 2D materials, and engineered atomic-scale structures exhibiting emergent electronic and magnetic phenomena. Key tasks include:
- Conducting fundamental experimental research to advance the understanding of quantum materials.
- Fabricating and cleanly assembling 2D van der Waals heterostructures using controlled transfer techniques.
- Performing structural and electronic characterization of fabricated heterostructures.
- Carrying out ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) cryogenic STM measurements using advanced setups (1 K STM up to 8 T and 4 K STM integrated with STML and TERS).
- Operating, maintaining, and analyzing data from state-of-the-art scanning probe microscopy systems.
- Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at international conferences.
- Collaborating actively within a high-performance multidisciplinary research team.
Eligibility & Qualification
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Education: A Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline (degree must be completed before the starting date).
- Required Experience: Demonstrated hands-on experience in the fabrication and characterization of 2D van der Waals heterostructures, including transfer techniques and cleanroom microfabrication.
- Preferred Experience: Practical experience in low-temperature/cryogenic STM measurements.
- Track Record: A strong record of creative research evidenced by peer-reviewed scientific publications.
- Skills: Excellent command of written and spoken English, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary based on the Finnish University Salary System (€3,700 – €4,000 gross per month) plus holiday bonuses.
- Generous annual leave (4 to 6 weeks) and strong work-life balance.
- Relocation support for international candidates moving to Finland.
- Comprehensive social benefits, high standard of living, and free/affordable public services and education.
- A vibrant and international scientific community supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure at the Nanoscience Center.
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted electronically through the university recruitment portal. Before applying, ensure your ORCID profile is up to date with publication visibility set to “Everyone”.
Please prepare the following documents in English (PDF format):
- Curriculum Vitae (CV): Formatted following good scientific practice and the template provided by the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity (TENK).
- Motivation / Cover Letter: Maximum 2 pages outlining research interests, career goals, and relevant qualifications.
- List of Publications: Numbered complete list compliant with the Research Council of Finland guidelines.
- Degree Certificate: Copy of the highest degree earned.
