Eligibility / Qualifications
- Educational Background: A doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in physics, engineering, aerosol science, atmospheric science, optics, photonics, environmental science, or a related discipline (must be completed by the start date).
- Experimental & Technical Skills: Hands-on expertise with scientific instrumentation, complemented by proficient programming and scientific data analysis skills.
- Desirable Experience: Prior background working with black-carbon or photoacoustic measurement devices is a strong asset. Experience in instrument prototyping, electronics, calibration routines, uncertainty analysis, or field campaigns is highly valued.
- Language & Communication: Excellent oral and written English skills. Strong collaborative mindset and leadership capabilities. Knowledge of the Finnish language is not required.
Job Description
Driven by the European Directive (EU) 2024/2881 on ambient air quality—which mandates black-carbon monitoring at urban and rural supersites—this project focuses on developing robust, traceable optical measurement methodologies for equivalent black carbon (eBC).
Key responsibilities include:
- Advancing the existing multi-wavelength photoacoustic system (PAAS-4λ) and engineering a new instrument iteration optimized for comprehensive laboratory testing and characterization.
- Developing, validating, and establishing traceable calibration procedures for photoacoustic and optical aerosol instruments.
- Conducting experimental design, uncertainty calculations, and advanced analysis on field datasets collected from Arctic and sub-Arctic monitoring stations.
- Leading high-impact scientific publications and presenting research findings at international conferences.
- Co-supervising Master’s and PhD students recruited into the group and contributing to research grant proposals.
