Postdoctoral Position in KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden

Postdoctoral Researcher in Sensitivity of Metals: The Hultgren Laboratory at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to explore materials behavior under high strain-rate deformation. This role focuses on advancing experimental and computational methodologies to improve high-strain-rate material models for metallic materials.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Characterization of Strain-Rate Sensitivity of Metals

Designation

Postdoctoral Researcher

Research Area

Materials Science and Engineering

Location

Stockholm, Sweden

Eligibility/Qualification

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in materials science, experimental physics, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Research experience in the mechanical behavior and microstructures of metallic materials (e.g., LIPIT, Split-Hopkinson tests, tensile testing).
  • Proficient in English (spoken and written).
  • Self-motivated with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent collaboration skills and leadership potential.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree obtained within the last three years.
  • Knowledge or strong interest in finite element modeling (FEM) and physics-informed machine learning (AI).
  • Computational modeling experience is preferred.
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with a focus on gender equality.

Job Description

The postdoctoral project aims to establish an experimental test methodology, Laser-induced particle impact testing (LIPIT), for evaluating high strain-rate behavior in metallic materials. The successful candidate will:

  • Collaborate with partners to define experimental and modeling strategies.
  • Perform micromechanical tests and microstructure characterization.
  • Utilize finite element modeling (FEM) and explore machine learning applications to develop a materials library for strain-rate sensitivity.
  • Engage with industrial partners such as Epiroc, Höganäs, Ovako, and others.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should log into KTH’s recruitment system to complete their application, which should include:

  • A CV detailing relevant experience and knowledge.
  • Copies of diplomas and grades from previous studies (translations into English or Swedish if needed).
  • A brief account (maximum two pages) explaining research motivation, academic interests, and future goals.

Last Date to Apply

Application must be received by August 8, 2025 at midnight CET/CEST.
