Postdoctoral Researcher in Virology: The University of Antwerp is seeking a dedicated postdoctoral researcher to join the Department of Biomedical Sciences within the Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences. This role focuses on exploring the molecular mechanisms through which respiratory viruses impact neural structures and their association with neuroimmune interactions and neurodegenerative diseases.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD in Biomedical Sciences, Medicine, (Bio-)Engineering Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Expertise in virology; experience in neuronal infections and/or ALI cultures is advantageous.
  • Must not have resided, studied, or worked in Belgium for more than 24 months in the last 3 years.
  • Eligibility for junior FWO postdoctoral fellowship and/or MSCA European Postdoctoral Fellowship.
  • Strong communication skills; fluent in academic English (speaking and writing).
  • Experience supervising PhD and master students is preferred.

Job Description:

The selected candidate will focus on:

  • Investigating how human respiratory viral infections correlate with neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Developing human models to explore the interaction between respiratory viruses and neuronal structures.
  • Collaborating with research groups in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Parasitology and Hygiene (LMPH) and the Laboratory for Experimental Hematology (LEH).
  • Preparing applications for personal fellowships (FWO and MSCA) and participating in grant writing workshops.
  • Co-supervising PhD and master students, conducting research, and communicating effectively with stakeholders involved.
