Eligibility / Qualification

  • PhD or DSc in plant science, molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry, biophysics, or relevant fields. Candidates close to degree completion may also be considered.
  • Excellent spoken and written English skills.
  • Significant experience in biological, biochemical, or biophysical research.
  • Strong academic writing competencies.
  • Proficiency in experimental design, statistical analysis, and data visualization.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with cyanobacterial or algal cell culturing.
  • Molecular biology and gene editing (e.g., CRISPr).
  • Coding skills in R, Python, LabTalk, or similar.
  • Bioinformatics experience.
  • Familiarity with photosynthesis measurement techniques (e.g., spectroscopy, gas exchange).
  • Experience with electrophysiological techniques (e.g., voltage clamp).
  • Strong publication record and collaborative skills.
  • Mentoring or supervising experience.
  • Familiarity with omics approaches and high-throughput data analysis.

Job Description

The successful candidate will focus on determining the molecular mechanisms regulating the electrochemical membrane potential (proton motive force) in photosynthetic bacteria. The project aims to understand how cyanobacteria thrive in varying environments and apply this knowledge to optimize solar-powered biotechnologies. The position is part of a dynamic research group led by Dr. Lauri Nikkanen, which is engaged in high-impact photosynthesis research as part of a global network.
