PhD Studentship on Sustainable Catalysis, Queen Mary University of London

Postdoctoral Position in UK United Kingdom

PhD Studentship on Sustainable Catalysis: Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is offering a PhD studentship in collaboration with the China Scholarship Council (CSC) on the development of sustainable catalysis with 3d metals. This multidisciplinary project aims to address the challenge of using scarce noble metals in industrial setups by exploring the unique reactivity modes of base metals like cobalt or chromium. The resulting complexes, designed with earth-abundant elements, will be investigated for catalytic reactions, including C-H bond functionalization and small molecule activation, with a focus on their potential interaction with light.

Scholarship Description:

PhD Studentship: QMUL – China Scholarship Council on Sustainable Catalysis with 3d Metals

The successful PhD applicant will join the Planas lab, a research group at the Department of Chemistry with expertise in organometallic synthesis. The project involves the synthesis of organic and inorganic compounds, optimization of reaction conditions, and isolation of reactive intermediates. The student will have opportunities to travel to national and international conferences, collaborate with leading groups, and access world-class facilities at QMUL.

Eligibility: Applications to the China Scholarship Council (CSC) are invited from candidates with or expecting to receive the equivalent of a first or upper-second class master’s degree in Chemistry. Applicants should have experience or interest in catalysis and organometallic chemistry. QMUL is inclusive, supporting talented students regardless of their background.

Required Documents: Interested candidates are required to submit the following documents to apply for the studentship:

  1. CV (Curriculum Vitae)
  2. Cover Letter
  3. English IELTS Scores (if applicable)

Note: If English is not your first language, a valid English certificate equivalent to IELTS 6.5+ overall with a minimum score of 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 in all sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking) is required.

How to Apply: To apply for this studentship, candidates should directly contact Dr. Planas with their CV, cover letter, and English IELTS scores. For detailed instructions on direct applications, please visit the official webpage: QMUL PhD Research.
