Research Associate at University of York: The Department of Chemistry at the University of York is seeking a Research Associate to join the Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories (WACL) and investigate the emissions of organic compounds from domestic woodburning stoves. This position is available from May 2023 for a fixed-term period of up to 24 months. The research project, funded by a NERC Standard Grant titled ‘CondensabLe AeRosol from non-Ideal Stove Emissions (CLARISE),’ aims to explore the impact of stove operation and burn phase on the emissions of gases and particles during domestic wood combustion.
Designation: Research Associate
Research Area: Atmospheric or Analytical Chemistry
Location: University of York campus, UK
Eligibility/Qualification:
- First degree in Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Sciences, or Natural Sciences
- Ph.D. in Atmospheric or Analytical Chemistry
- Research expertise in atmospheric organic gases/aerosols or use of simulation chamber experiments
- Experience in complex mixture analysis using chromatography or mass spectrometry
- Strong planning and prioritization skills
- Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality research
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including publication and conference presentation experience
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team and independently with initiative
Job Description: As a Research Associate, you will collaborate with Professor Jacqui Hamilton and Dr. Andrew Rickard at WACL to conduct detailed characterization of organic emissions from woodburning stoves. Collect gas and filter samples during combustion experiments and analyze the organic fraction using two-dimensional gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.Identify how non-ideal burning affects organic emissions and compare them with standard emission factors. Create volatility distributions for use in atmospheric models. You will also participate in emissions monitoring and atmospheric oxidation experiments at the University of Manchester’s Stove Facility.
