Research Fellow at UCL, London, UK

PhD Scholarships at University of Bradford, UK- 2021

Research Fellow at UCL: Join the Molecular and Cultural Evolution (MACE) Lab at UCL, London, as a Research Fellow. The lab, led by Professor Mark Thomas, focuses on model-based statistical inference to better understand human demographic, biological, and cultural evolution. This position involves developing and implementing statistical models of maritime contact and trade networks in the 3rd millennium BCE Mediterranean. The successful candidate will analyze cultural data, calibrated radiocarbon dates, and environmental patterns to infer routes of trade and cultural dissemination. Candidates with a PhD in computational science or mathematics with an interest in archaeology, or a PhD in archaeology, geography, or a biological science with experience in computational modeling and model-based statistical inference, are encouraged to apply. This is a contract position with a funding end date, initially from November 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024, with the possibility of extension for an additional two years.

Job Description:

Research Fellow – Molecular and Cultural Evolution (MACE) Lab, UK

The Research Fellow will work on the ‘Seascapes’ research project, focused on tracing the emergence and spread of maritime networks in the 3rd millennium BCE Mediterranean. The project involves conducting a large-scale radiocarbon dating program and implementing spatio-temporal network modeling to understand the origins and dynamics of these emerging maritime networks. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing spatial modeling of cultural and chronological data using a contact network approach.
