Research Fellow in Molecular Plant: Join the Gibbs and Sanchez-Moran labs at the School of Biosciences, University of Birmingham, as a Research Fellow. This position is for the BBSRC-funded project “MEIAD: Investigating roles for meiosis associated degradation during meiotic recombination in plants.” The project focuses on understanding the role of the ubiquitin proteasome system in regulating crossover (CO) determination and homologous recombination in Arabidopsis plants during meiosis. This research will contribute to the understanding of genetic inheritance and its potential applications in diverse species.
Designation: Research Fellow
Location: Birmingham, United Kingdom
Salary: £34,980 to £44,263 (with potential progression)
Contract Type: Fixed-Term Contract up to January 2027
Eligibility/Qualification: The ideal candidate should have a PhD (or one near completion) in molecular plant biology and/or protein biochemistry. Experience in working with proteins, Arabidopsis, post-translational protein modifications, and mass-spec-based proteomics approaches is desirable. Prior publications in high-quality journals are a plus.
Job Description: As a Research Fellow, you will:
- Functionally characterize proteolytic components related to CO regulation, including E3 ubiquitin ligases and the 26S proteasome.
- Identify meiotic ubiquitin/degradation targets using protein degradation assays and proteomics-based approaches.
- Define the synergistic and spatiotemporal activity of MEIAD components during meiotic progression.
- Investigate how MEIAD manipulation modulates meiosis, particularly CO number and localization.
- Play a leading role in experiment design, data presentation, and research manuscript writing.
You will be based in the Plant Science & Food Security theme within the School of Biosciences, University of Birmingham. You may also have the opportunity to assist in supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students.
