Research Fellow – School of Biosciences: The University of Birmingham is seeking a talented Research Fellow to join our School of Biosciences. This position offers an exciting opportunity to investigate the mechanisms of Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT) in pathogenic fungi, specifically focusing on a novel group of transposons known as Starships. The role is a full-time, fixed-term contract funded until August 2028.

Biochemistry, Structural Biology, Protein Engineering, and Synthetic Biology in the context of Horizontal Gene Transfer in pathogenic fungi.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD (or near to completion) in Biochemistry, Structural Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
  • A track record of scientific output, including peer-reviewed publications or pre-prints.
  • Experience in protein expression, purification, and biochemical assays is essential.

Job Description:
As a Research Fellow, you will:

  • Design and implement novel experimental tools to study the mobility of Starship transposons in vitro and in vivo.
  • Characterize transposase enzymes and their DNA-binding capacity through biochemical assays.
  • Explore the structure and function of transposases using tools such as structural modeling and X-ray crystallography.
  • Develop assays for genome engineering applications utilizing transposases.
  • Collaborate with lab members and contribute to building biochemistry expertise within the group.
  • Supervise PhD students and assist them with their research.
  • Contribute to grant applications and funding proposals to establish an independent research trajectory.
  • Disseminate research findings via peer-reviewed publications and at scientific conferences.
