Researcher – Bacteria-Phage Dynamics The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment at SLU is seeking a Researcher for a position that is part of the ERC starting grant MULTIPHAGE team. The researcher will contribute to the understanding of phage-bacteria eco-evolutionary dynamics in freshwater ecosystems through laboratory experiments, bioinformatics analyses, and fieldwork.

Location: Uppsala

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD degree (or equivalent) in microbiology, microbial ecology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or related areas.
  • Proficiency in English speaking and writing.
  • Analytical mindset and keen interest in aquatic microbial ecology and phage genome evolution.
  • Strong track record of scholarly publications.
  • Expertise in multi-omics analysis of bacterial and phage communities.
  • Demonstrated experience using computer programming languages (UNIX command line and R/python) for multi-omics data analysis.
  • Personal suitability, including good collaboration skills, ability to work independently and as a member of a group, and flexibility and problem-solving skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in phage isolation and long-term handling of phage and bacterial isolates.
  • Experience with fieldwork and processing water samples.
  • Experience in mentorship of students.

Job Description:

Researcher – Bacteria-Phage Dynamics and Co-evolution in Freshwater

The researcher will be involved in metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analysis of host-virus dynamics, identifying infection networks in lake ecosystems, fieldwork for lake sampling, laboratory experiments, alternative analytical methods, biostatistical analyses, and scientific communication. The position is part of the ERC starting grant MULTIPHAGE, addressing knowledge gaps in phage genome evolution.
