Melbourne Research Fellowships in University of Melbourne, Australia

Scholarship Post: Bioengineering: A PhD scholarship is available for a project aiming to bioengineer patient-specific osteochondral (OC) grafts using natural materials. The project focuses on creating grafts that mimic the architecture and functional properties of native OC tissue, providing an alternative to total joint arthroplasty for patients with osteoarthritis.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree (1st class honours or equivalent) or Master’s degree.
  • Background in biomedical sciences, biomedical engineering, or stem cell biology.

Job Description

The project aims to develop patient-specific OC grafts using natural materials. The approach involves:

  • Creating 3D computer models based on native subchondral bone architecture.
  • Printing high-resolution models from a tough, strong, and osseointegrative bioceramic.
  • Bonding cellular layers of hyaline and calcified cartilage to the bioceramic base.
  • Maturing the constructs in a bioreactor to match the properties of native tissue. This work addresses the need for alternatives to total joint arthroplasty, offering a potential solution for patients with osteoarthritis who face high risks of revision surgeries.
