Scientist Position in Biophotovoltaics: The Department of Microbial Biotechnology at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) is seeking a highly-motivated scientist (f/m/x) for a groundbreaking research project funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. This project focuses on developing a novel photo-biohybrid concept for ammonia production through the coupling of a natural oxygenic photosystem and the enzyme nitrogenase.

Eligibility/Qualification
- PhD in: Bioorganic chemistry, molecular biotechnology, biochemical engineering, or related areas.
- Essential Experience:
- Redox hydrogel design, characterization, and interface with living systems.
- Microscopy and spectroscopy techniques.
- Bonus Experience:
- Pure microbial culture.
- Chemical modification using click chemistry.
- Skills:
- Excellent communication and team-working abilities.
- High self-motivation and initiative.
- Proficient in English (speaking and writing).
Job Description
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Developing redox hydrogel-cyanobacteria photobioanodes.
- Applying microscopy-based analytics to characterize the bio-hydrogel interface and electron transfer kinetics.
- Engineering the bio-hydrogel interface using techniques like click chemistry to enhance electron transfer kinetics.
- Developing a prototype system that combines photobioanode and enzymatic cathode to demonstrate the photobioammonium production concept.
- Communicating closely with project partners and driving project progress.
- Publishing in reputable journals and presenting at leading scientific conferences.
