Senior Postdoctoral Research Scientist: Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position within Dr. Quince’s High-Resolution Microbiomics group at the Earlham Institute in Norwich, UK. The role involves developing novel mathematical models of microbial communities, integrating data from multiple sources to enhance our understanding of microbial interactions. The position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of theoretical and experimental methods for microbial community analysis.
Designation: Postdoctoral / Senior Postdoctoral Research Scientist
Research Area: Mathematical Models of Microbial Communities
Location: Earlham Institute, Norwich, UK
Eligibility/Qualification:
- PhD in mathematics, physics, bioinformatics, or statistics, or a related subject with a strong element of mathematical modeling.
- First-class degree in any area of science.
- Knowledge of command line bioinformatics, software programming (R, Python, C/C++), and a basic understanding of calculus and statistics.
- Proven record in scientific writing and experience in oral research presentations.
- Knowledge of Bayesian statistics, bioinformatics of metagenomics or metabolomics, and a biological understanding of microbial communities and metabolism (advantageous).
- For Senior Postdoctoral Research Scientist (SC5 level), candidates should have sufficient experience in mathematical modeling, demonstrated ability to organize and lead analysis of complex data sets, and potential for supervising graduate students.
Job Description: The selected candidate will be responsible for developing predictive mechanistic models of microbial communities, integrating data types such as abundances, metabolites, and expression levels. The role may involve aspects of dynamical systems, metabolic modeling, and the application of numerical optimization methods. The developed models will contribute to interpreting metagenome-metabolome samples from clinical and reactor experiments, particularly focusing on therapeutic diets in Crohn’s disease treatment.
