Swansea PhD: EPSRC iCASE and Dstl PhD Scholarship Project, UK

Postdoctoral Position in UK United Kingdom

Swansea PhD: EPSRC: Join Swansea University in pioneering the development of innovative protein-based adhesives for defence and engineering applications. This fully funded EPSRC iCASE and Dstl PhD scholarship project offers an exciting opportunity to craft environmentally friendly adhesives inspired by nature, surpassing the limitations of conventional adhesives in terms of durability and ecological impact.

Study Area: Materials Engineering, Biochemistry, Biotechnology

Location: Swansea University, United Kingdom

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Applicants from diverse backgrounds in engineering, biology, and physical sciences are welcome.
  • Preference for candidates with multidisciplinary interests.
  • Strong academic record with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in interdisciplinary research.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Description: This project focuses on developing protein-based adhesives inspired by nature, tailored for challenging materials in defence and engineering sectors. Traditional adhesives face limitations in durability and ecological impact. The innovative bioadhesives aim to eliminate these drawbacks by employing microbes that naturally use functional amyloid peptides for adhesion and biofilm formation. Through genetic and chemical engineering, a suite of novel adhesives will be created to bridge interfaces between materials, offering superior bonding capabilities even underwater. The project, led by a multidisciplinary team, offers comprehensive training and mentorship in a highly interdisciplinary research environment.
