TEAGASC PhD WALSH Scholarship: Join Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority, and Wageningen University & Research in an exciting PhD opportunity funded by the Walsh Scholarships Programme. We are seeking a qualified candidate to contribute to the LivingAsh project, focusing on investigating the transcriptome to design a molecular marker system for rapid selection of healthy Living Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) to breed disease-tolerant genotypesâ„¢.
Designation: PhD Researcher
Research Area: Investigating Transcriptome for Molecular Marker System in Living Ash
Location: Teagasc, Oak Park Research Centre (Ireland) and Wageningen University & Research (Netherlands)
Eligibility/Qualification: First-class master’s degree in Plant Science or related fields. Proficiency in English (specified language requirements apply).
Job Description: The LivingAsh project addresses the threat to common Ash caused by the invasive fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. This research aims to accelerate the breeding program for disease-tolerant Ash trees using genomic selection tools. The project involves:
- Exploring the transcriptomic response of ash genotypes to the fungal pathogen, H. fraxineus.
- Developing cost-effective molecular and biochemical genome-scanning marker systems for disease-resistant ash populations.
- Evaluating selected ash genotypes for disease tolerance under field conditions and establishing improved ash seed orchards in Ireland.
How to Apply: To apply, the candidate must fulfill the following criteria:
- Hold a First-class master’s degree in Plant Science or relevant fields.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the English language (specified language requirements apply).
For detailed information about the application process and language requirements, please visit the Teagasc and Wageningen University & Research websites.
Last Date for Apply: To be announced
This Walsh Scholarship opportunity presents a chance to contribute to vital research in forest tree improvement and disease tolerance. Join our interdisciplinary team and make a meaningful impact on the future of ash tree breeding.
