Three-year Postdoc in Evolutionary Genetics at the University of New Mexico

Project Scientist at NCSCM - Apply by 15 October 2020

Three-year Postdoc: Join the Martinson Lab at the University of New Mexico (UNM) as a Postdoc with expertise in RNA-Seq analysis in insects or plants. In this position, you will investigate the genetic basis of plant galls. Plant galls induced by insects represent fascinating and complex interactions in nature, capturing the interest of scientists and evolutionary biologists for centuries. This research opportunity aims to uncover the mechanisms behind gall formation and understand the intricate genetic processes involved.

Designation: Postdoctoral Researcher

Research Area: Evolutionary Genetics

Location: University of New Mexico (UNM), New Mexico

Eligibility/Qualification: We are seeking a Postdoc with the following qualifications:

  • Strong background and experience in RNA-Seq analysis in insects or plants.
  • Familiarity with the genetic basis of plant galls or related research fields.
  • Ph.D. in Genetics, Evolutionary Biology, or a related discipline.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Effective communication and scientific writing skills.

Job Description: In this position, you will join a collaborative project between the Martinson Lab at UNM and the Egan Lab at Rice University. The focus of the research is on Live Oak cynipid wasps, where multiple wasp species induce galls on the same oak species. The overall objective is to establish the diversity and evolution of conserved genes in wasps and plant hosts involved in gall formation. By studying the gall induction process of phylogenetically distinct wasps on a single host plant species, we aim to expand our findings to diverse gall-inducing insects and host plants. This project has the potential to contribute to plant biotechnology and the development of powerful genomic editing tools.

How to Apply: If interested, please send the following documents to Ellen Martinson at emartinson@unm.edu:

  1. Cover letter expressing your interest in the position.
  2. Curriculum vitae (CV) highlighting your relevant experience and qualifications.

Last Date for Apply: The application deadline is to be determined.
