This fellowship is dedicated to the memory of Professor Trevor Platt FRS FRCS, a distinguished British and Canadian biological oceanographer, who made significant contributions to the field of oceanography and limnology. The Fellowship aims to support early career researchers (ECRs) in the area of biological oceanography and offers the opportunity to undertake a research project at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) in the United Kingdom. The Fellowship will provide a bursary of £15k to cover travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses for a period of four to six months, with the second fellowship expected to commence in summer 2024.

  • Research proposal aligned with one of the specified research areas
  • Capacity building and potential for lasting impact on regional observations
  • Collaboration with a relevant PML host scientist

Job Description: The Trevor Platt Fellowship supports one early career researcher (ECR) each year to undertake a research project in any aspect of biological oceanography at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), UK. The Fellowship is open to researchers working on various topics related to marine ecosystems, including but not limited to primary production, marine phytoplankton, aquatic ecosystem thermodynamics, physical and biological interactions in the ocean, marine optics, and the ocean carbon cycle.

How to Apply:

  • Interested candidates can apply for the fellowship by developing a research proposal and identifying a relevant PML host scientist.
  • The application portal will be open from September 1, 2023, to December 15, 2023.
  • Applicants will need to submit their research proposal, CV, capacity building & impact statement, and a supporting statement from the PML host scientist.
  • Before the portal opens, candidates are encouraged to contact a PML host scientist to start the proposal development process.

This Fellowship aims to support the next generation of oceanographers and continue Professor Trevor Platt’s legacy in championing ocean stewardship and capacity building among young researchers. The first Trevor Platt Fellow, Gayathra Bandara, has already commenced their Fellowship at PML, working on the topic of ‘Adverse weather effects induced by climate change: How would marine benthos respond?’ We look forward to welcoming another talented ECR in Summer 2024.
