Postdoctoral Fellow in Belgium

VLIZ recruits: Researcher (postdoc): Join us in the fight against climate change and its impact on the ocean. VLIZ is looking for a highly motivated Researcher (postdoc) to work on a pioneering project that combines in-situ observations and machine learning to enhance our understanding of the coastal carbon cycle, with a focus on the Belgian North Sea coast. This 30-month fully-funded position offers an exceptional opportunity to contribute to climate assessment studies and carbon mitigation efforts.

Location: Innovocean Campus, Ostend, Belgium

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD degree in Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Sciences, etc), Mathematics, or Informatics (required)
  • Enthusiasm for big data analyses, machine learning, and remote sensing (required); previous experience with these tools is a plus
  • Proven track record of publishing international peer-reviewed journal publications (required)
  • Proficiency in at least 1 programming language (required)
  • Enthusiasm for bridging science and industry (optional)

Job Description: As a Researcher (postdoc) at VLIZ, you will:

  • Combine in-situ and remote sensing data with machine learning tools to advance our understanding of the coastal carbon cycle.
  • Contribute to closing the marine carbon budget of the Belgian North Sea, supporting climate assessment studies and carbon mitigation efforts.
  • Develop innovative machine learning-based methodologies applicable at a global scale.
  • Act as a bridge between the scientific community and industry, helping pave the way for a carbon-neutral future.
