PhD Position: Modelling of Muscle, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Postdoc positions - 2019-Amsterdam, Netherlands

PhD Position: Modelling of Muscle: The Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is offering a funded PhD position in the Department of Human Movement Sciences. The research focuses on the fundamental process of converting chemical energy into mechanical energy in muscle tissue, exploring the relationship between metabolic energy expenditure and mechanical behavior. The project employs a blended approach of experimentation and simulation to bridge the gap between single muscle-level research and applied research in whole organisms.

PhD Position: Modelling the Energetics of Muscle Contraction

Designation: PhD Student

Research Area: Modelling the Energetics of Muscle Contraction

Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • MSc in movement sciences or related field (kinesiology, biology, or biomedical/(bio)mechanical engineering).
  • Affinity with both empirical science and computer simulations.
  • Affinity with mechanics and physiology/biology.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Comfortable with programming in Matlab and/or Python.

Job Description: The successful candidate will work in the Department of Human Movement Sciences, collaborating with other PhD students, postdocs, and staff members. The role involves a combination of modelling and experimentation, using forward dynamics simulations and/or optimal control to model human muscles and movements. The candidate will contribute to the understanding of the relationship between metabolic energy expenditure and mechanical behavior, leading to scientific publications and presentations at international conferences. The four-year program, supervised by Dr. Koen Lemaire, Dr. Ritchie Goulding, and Prof. Dr. Jaap van Dieen, may include optional educational experiences.

How to Apply: Interested candidates should apply via the application button and upload a single PDF including:
