PhD Studentship in Computational Chemistry – University of Reading, UK

Postdoctoral Position in UK United Kingdom

PhD Studentship in Computational Chemistry: The University of Reading’s Chemistry Department invites applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship in Computational Chemistry, focusing on modelling stable isotope fractionation in minerals using a combination of computational chemistry and machine learning techniques. The project, supervised by Dr. Ricardo Grau-Crespo, Dr. Zuowei Wang, Dr. Marco Sacchi, and Prof. Dominik Fleitmann, aims to enhance the prediction of stable isotope fractionation between different phases, critical for reconstructing climate history.

PhD Studentship in Computational Chemistry – Modelling Stable Isotope Fractionation in Minerals: Computational Chemistry and Machine Learning

Designation: PhD Studentship

Research Area: Computational Chemistry, Machine Learning, Stable Isotope Fractionation, Geochemistry, Climate History

Location: University of Reading – Chemistry

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Minimum 2:1 Bachelor Degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Computer Science, or related subjects.
  • Open to UK applicants only.

Funding Details:

  • Start Date: September 2024
  • 3-year award, with the option for a one-year extension.
  • Covers full tuition fees, research expenses, plus UKRI stipend (currently £18,622 for 2023/24 academic year).

Job Description: The successful candidate will work on advancing theoretical models using molecular modeling techniques based on quantum chemistry or classical forcefields, with a focus on stable isotope fractionation. The project leverages recent advancements in molecular modeling incorporating machine-learning algorithms to overcome computational challenges. The goal is to achieve faster and more accurate predictions of stable isotope fractionation, transforming the interpretation of stable-isotope records.
