PhD f/m/d – magnetic materials: The Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE) is seeking a highly motivated individual for a Ph.D. position to conduct fundamental research on the micro/nanoscale microstructural effects on the magnetic properties of permanent magnetic materials. The project is part of a collaboration between MPIE and IWKS Fraunhofer, focusing on the synthesis, post-processing, and recycling of different classes of permanent magnets. Eligibility/Qualification:
- Master’s degree in materials science, physics, material chemistry, material engineering, or related fields.
- Strong understanding of microstructure evolution principles and their effects on macroscopic properties, with a focus on magnetic properties.
- Previous knowledge of SEM and FIB preparation is relevant but not essential.
- Knowledge of electron diffraction (EBSD) and atom probe tomography (APT) is an advantage.
- Experience in working with magnetic materials and/or characterizing their magnetic properties is a strong asset.
- Good command of the English language is required.
Job Description: The successful candidate will:
- Manage and coordinate collaboration between MPIE and IWKS Fraunhofer.
- Prepare specimens using metallographic and micromechanical tools for microstructural investigations with various electron microscopes.
- Conduct microstructural and microchemical characterization using electron diffraction, spectroscopy, and tomography.
- Focus on high-resolution structural and chemical analysis using atom probe tomography (APT) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
- Perform sample preparation using focused ion beam milling (FIB).
- Collaborate on magnetic property measurements with partners at IWKS Fraunhofer.
- Interpret results from a materials physics perspective and discuss process modifications or optimizations.
- Publish scientific results in international journals and present findings at conferences and meetings.
- Regularly meet and collaborate with IWKS Fraunhofer collaborators, both online and on-site.
