PhD Position on Biorefining of Hemp: The Faculty of Science, Forestry, and Technology at the University of Eastern Finland invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher (PhD Student) position in Holistic evaluation and interconnected value generation of hemp utilization in material, chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors. The position is part of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Training Network DESTINY and is set to commence on 1st September 2024, or no later than 1st December 2024.

Location: University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio Campus, Finland (Research visit to the University of Bologna, UNIBO, Italy)
Eligibility/Qualification:
- MSc degree in physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a related field in science or engineering.
- Good command of the English language (IELTS grade min. 6.5, or equivalent).
- Should not hold a doctoral degree.
- Applicants should be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of their research career, calculated from the date of obtaining the MSc degree (or equivalent).
- Prior experience in biomass processing, biomolecular characterization, and laboratory work related to the application are advantageous.
Description: The research focuses on the comprehensive utilization of hemp in sustainable products, exploring the extraction of speciality chemicals from hemp and processing residues. These compounds can be used in surface treatments, coatings, composites, or seedbeds, enhancing antimicrobial properties in materials or food-related products. The Doctoral Researcher will be based at the University of Eastern Finland and may undertake a research visit to the University of Bologna, Italy, to enhance understanding of European hemp valorization potential.
