PhD Scholarship in Microbial Ecology: Join the Environmental Metagenomics group at the Research Center One Health Ruhr, part of the University Alliance Ruhr and the Department of Chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen. We’re seeking a motivated PhD student for the DFG-funded project “DeepH,” exploring the horizontal evolution of uncultivated archaea in the deep biosphere. PhD Scholarship Opportunity in Microbial Ecology: Exploring Deep Biospheres

Location: Campus Essen, Germany

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in microbiology, microbial ecology, geomicrobiology, genomics, bioinformatics, or related fields.
  • Proficient in DNA extraction and (q)PCR.
  • Bioinformatics skills are advantageous, particularly in genome-resolved metagenomics, Oxford Nanopore Technologies, and programming (shell, Python, and/or R).
  • Fieldwork experience and fluorescence microscopy knowledge are desirable.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Demonstrated self-initiative, creativity, interpersonal skills, and flexibility.

Description: The DeepH project focuses on exploring microbial genome organization of archaea in deep subsurface ecosystems worldwide. As a PhD student, you’ll utilize genome-resolved metagenomics and long-read technology, alongside bioinformatics, microscopy, and participation in international research expeditions. You’ll collaborate closely with Prof. Dr. Probst’s team and the lab of Ulrike Endesfelder at the University of Bonn. Additionally, you’ll have opportunities for career development through the Water Graduate School at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
