Fully-Funded PhD Position in Biology: The Microbial Feedback to Warming

Study Area: Biology, Microbial Ecology, Biogeochemistry

Location: Lund, Skåne län, Sweden

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Applicants should hold an advanced university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in biology, biogeochemistry, environmental science, or related fields, preferably with a focus on microbial ecology.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and oral, is required.
  • Documented experience in research, laboratory methods relevant to the project, and analytical techniques such as biomarkers, amplicon sequencing, radiotracers, or stable isotope tracers is highly desirable.
  • Candidates should meet the general and specific admission requirements for third-cycle studies at Lund University.

Description: The project focuses on understanding the microbial feedback to climate change-induced warming and its implications for the global carbon cycle. Microorganisms play a crucial role in soil carbon dynamics, influencing the balance between carbon release to the atmosphere and sequestration in soil. This PhD position aims to investigate how soil warming affects microbial carbon-use efficiency (CUE) across different biomes and seasons. By assessing microbial thermal traits and their responses to warming, the project seeks to elucidate the complex interactions between climate change, microbial ecology, and soil biogeochemistry.

How to Apply: Interested candidates should submit the following documents by April 8, 2024, via the university’s online application portal:

  1. A motivation letter (max 2 pages) outlining your interest in pursuing a PhD, previous education, and research experiences.
  2. Curriculum vitae (CV) detailing academic qualifications, research experience, and publications.
  3. Copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records.
  4. Contact information (phone, email) for at least two personal references.
  5. Relevant publications, including accepted academic papers and research theses (if applicable).
