Postdoctoral Researcher in Tissue Mechanobiology: The Faculty of Science, in collaboration with the Mathematical Institute and the Institute of Biology at Leiden University, is seeking a talented Postdoctoral Researcher in Mathematical Biology or Computational Science to join the Gravitation programme GreenTE, focusing on three-dimensional simulation models of plant tissue mechanobiology.

Location: Leiden, Netherlands

Eligibility/Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in applied mathematics, computational/theoretical physics, theoretical biology, computer science, or related field
  • Proficiency in English (both written and oral)
  • Ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Strong communication skills for collaboration with experts in cell biology and mathematics
  • Interest in cell and developmental biology of plants
  • Experience in mathematical modeling (e.g., Cellular Potts modeling, vertex-based modeling, particle-based simulations, PDEs)
  • Proficient in scientific programming in C++, Cuda, and/or Python

Job Description: The successful candidate will:

  • Develop novel three-dimensional simulation techniques for modeling the mechanical regulation of plant development
  • Integrate new techniques into the plant modeling package VirtualLeaf
  • Design simulation experiments to interpret mechanical manipulations of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana
  • Incorporate detailed insights into the mechanical properties of cell walls based on experiments and simulations
  • Collaborate with a PhD student to extend models of mechanical regulation of plant development to three dimensions
  • Publish results in scientific literature
