PhD Position on Carbon Cycle, University of Southampton, UK

Post-Doctoral Fellowship Position at USA, Ozbolat Laboratory at Penn State

PhD Position on Carbon Cycle: This fully funded PhD position at the Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences aims to explore the role of CO2 release from sedimentary rocks as a potential missing driver of carbon cycle feedback mechanisms in past and future climates. This research will utilize a novel data-modelling approach to assess the impact of rock organic carbon oxidation on atmospheric CO2 changes during major climate transitions.

PhD Position on Carbon Cycle Feedback Mechanisms in Geological Climate Change

Designation
PhD Candidate

Research Area
Geological Climate Change, Carbon Cycle Feedbacks, Environmental Science

Location
Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences, University of Southampton, UK

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Minimum 2:1 UK honours degree (BSc or MSci) or equivalent
  • A master’s degree (MSc or MRes) at distinction level (more than 60%)
  • For international applicants: IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent English language proficiency

Job Description
The successful candidate will join a research team investigating the role of rock organic carbon oxidation in modulating atmospheric CO2 during significant climate events such as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum and the mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum. The research will involve a combination of data collection and modelling to test hypotheses about carbon cycle feedbacks and their implications for future climate projections. Supervision will be provided by Dr. Gordon Inglis, Dr. Richard Stockey, Professor Tom Gernon, and Professor Ben Mills from the University of Leeds.

How to Apply
Interested candidates should apply through the University of Southampton application portal by selecting:
