Scholarship Opportunity: Develop Synthetic Extracellular Matrix for Engineering Defined 3D Human Neural Tissue

Designation: Research Scholar – Synthetic Extracellular Matrix Development

Research Area:

The project focuses on developing novel chemical-defined, peptide-based hydrogels to engineer defined 3D human neural tissues for disease modeling and tissue repair.

Location:

Oxford-MRC Doctoral Training Partnership, University of Oxford, UK.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacology, or related fields.
  • Strong background in bio-printing, tissue engineering, or biomaterials.
  • Experience in cell culture, 3D tissue modeling, and neural cell biology is desirable.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Job Description:

  • Collaborate with leading scholars and a commercial partner to design and synthesize novel chemical-defined hydrogels.
  • Optimize hydrogel properties to match brain tissue characteristics.
  • Incorporate key brain extracellular matrix components into synthetic hydrogels and test their effects on neural cells.
  • Examine and quantify the ability of hydrogels to support the survival, maturation, and function of 3D neural tissues.
  • Contribute to the translational potential of the developed hydrogels in clinical applications.
