Three PhD Positions in AI: The University of Amsterdam is inviting applications for three fully funded PhD positions as part of the European Research Council-funded Advanced Grant ‘Deep Culture – Living with Difference in the Age of Deep Learning’. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to work on an interdisciplinary project focusing on the relations between deep learning and global cultural production and consumption, with a significant emphasis on addressing the limitations of deep-learning methods for critical analysis and fostering public understanding of deep learning’s global relations to culture.

Research Area

The research will focus on the relations between deep learning and historical-cultural concepts and practices, exploring the use of deep learning technologies in addressing cultural context and fostering public understanding.

University of Amsterdam, Netherlands

Eligibility/Qualification

  • A completed master’s degree in artificial intelligence, digital humanities, cultural-historical analysis, or science and technology studies
  • Demonstrable interest in socio-technical research and affinity with AI
  • Strong academic performance in relevant subjects and excellent research skills demonstrated by an outstanding master’s thesis
  • Experience with administrative and organizational skills

Job Description

  • Conduct research drawing on approaches from deep learning, digital humanities, critical AI, and data studies
  • Publish and present research results in leading international conferences and journals
  • Complete a PhD thesis within the period of appointment
  • Participate in project meetings and relevant networks
  • Contribute to knowledge dissemination activities with academic and other stakeholders
  • Contribute to teaching activities as an assistant to courses and/or guiding students in their thesis work
  • Contribute to the organizational and administrative work on the project
