Research Associate (Postdoc): The Smith Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in collaboration with the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center, is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher. This role focuses on developing cell-specific strategies for modifying plant cells in bioenergy crops, aimed at improving plant digestibility, animal nutrition, and advancing dairy sustainability.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • A PhD in Botany, Biochemistry, Plant Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or a related field obtained within the last year.
  • Experience with RNA sequencing, R, and RStudio is strongly encouraged.
  • A solid background in plant anatomy and cell wall biosynthesis.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a research environment.

Job Description:
This one-year postdoctoral position, with the possibility of extension, will be conducted under the supervision of Dr. Rebecca Smith. The successful candidate will engage in research focused on the following key responsibilities:

  • Investigating lignin biosynthesis in specific cell types of Sorghum bicolor.
  • Identifying and characterizing cell-type specific promoters for more efficient engineering of plant cell walls.
  • Conducting single-cell RNA sequencing paired with transcriptomic, metabolomic, and proteomic analyses.
  • Performing independent research and contributing to interdisciplinary projects within the Center.
  • Mentoring junior lab members and contributing to the publication of peer-reviewed journal articles.
