Job Description:
This PhD project aims to investigate ecological interactions between herbivorous pests, entomopathogenic fungi, and parasitoids from a chemical perspective. The successful candidate will:

  • Conduct experiments to evaluate aphid and parasitoid olfactory preferences towards fungi-inoculated plants.
  • Use gas chromatography and mass spectrometry to analyze plant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and understand chemical signaling in these interactions.
  • Employ electrophysiology to identify VOCs detected by insect antennae, creating synthetic blends to test behavioral activity.
  • Assess non-lethal effects of fungi-inoculated plants on parasitoid wasps, examining their fitness, learning, and physiology.
  • Gain hands-on experience in laboratory techniques, hypothesis testing, experimental design, and data analysis.

The project supports a regenerative agriculture approach, aiming to improve natural pest biocontrol through multitrophic ecological understanding. The supervisory team provides expertise in chemical ecology, entomology, microbiology, and analytical chemistry.
