This position focuses on environmental biotechnology with an emphasis on process innovation and microbiology in wastewater treatment. The successful candidate will contribute primarily to research but will also have opportunities for teaching and mentoring at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Post-doctoral Researcher in Sustainable and Innovative Wastewater Treatment
Designation:
Post-doctoral Researcher
Research Area:
Environmental Biotechnology, Wastewater Treatment, Microbiology, Process Innovation
Location:
Division of Water Environment Technology (WET), Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden
Eligibility/Qualification:
- PhD in a relevant field awarded within the last three years.
- Practical experience in wastewater process technology, especially in operating pilot- and/or lab-scale reactors.
- Desirable experience with bioelectrochemical systems, DNA extraction, PCR, and interpretation of amplicon sequencing/metagenomics data.
- Proven ability to conduct independent research and prepare scientific publications.

Job Description:
As a post-doctoral researcher, you will join our Wastewater Management and Environmental Biotechnology research group, collaborating with senior researchers and a project assistant. This project focuses on advancing wastewater treatment through the integration of an aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process with a bioelectrochemical sensor for volatile fatty acid (VFA) measurement, optimizing the performance of AGS systems. Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting independent research within a collaborative team.
- Operating an AGS pilot plant to evaluate nitrogen and phosphorus removal and granulation properties under varying VFA levels.
- Using molecular biology techniques and bioinformatics tools to assess microbial community responses to VFA availability.
- Testing bioelectrochemical-based sensors for dynamically controlling the anaerobic feeding phase.
- Contributing to teaching at undergraduate and master’s levels, as well as supervising students.
- Building a research track record that supports future opportunities in academia, industry, or the public sector.
How to Apply:
Your application must be written in English and include the following documents (PDF format, max 40 MB per file):
- CV: Include a complete list of publications, teaching experience, and contact details for two references.
- Personal Letter: A 1-3 page document introducing yourself, outlining your previous research areas, main research outcomes, and future goals.
