Research Associate – Human Stem Cell, University of Sheffield, UK

Postdoctoral Position in UK United Kingdom

Research Associate – Human Stem Cell : The University of Sheffield is inviting applications for a Research Associate position focused on human stem cell models of neurodegeneration, specifically Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). This is an exciting opportunity to work within a prestigious institution at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), contributing to significant advancements in neuroscience research.

Research Associate – Human Stem Cell Models of Neurodegeneration (ALS)

Designation:
Research Associate (Postdoctoral Research Associate – PDRA)

Research Area:
Neuroscience; Neurodegenerative Disorders (Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease)

Location:
Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • A Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, or Cellular Biology).
  • Proven track record in human iPSC-based disease modelling.
  • Experience with iPSC-derived neuronal cultures and correlating electrophysiological signatures is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in molecular cloning, PCR, biochemistry, and fluorescence microscopy is beneficial.
  • Demonstrated science communication skills (presentations, outreach activities, teaching/supervision).

Job Description:
The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team led by Dr. Matthew Livesey, Dr. James Alix, and Professor Dame Pamela Shaw at SITraN. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading the maintenance of curated iPSCs and generating iPSC-derived neuronal cultures.
  • Developing new iPSCs from ALS patient samples.
  • Conducting investigations of neuronal function utilizing state-of-the-art multi-electrode array technology.
  • Designing, executing, and interpreting experiments, compiling reports and publications.
  • Presenting findings at lab group and scientific meetings.
  • Coordinating efforts with clinicians for the generation of iPSCs from patient samples.

This position aims to bridge clinical neurophysiology with laboratory electrophysiology to enhance drug discovery and address patients’ variability in excitability characteristics.

How to Apply:
Interested candidates should submit their applications via the University of Sheffield’s job portal. Applications should include a CV, a cover letter detailing relevant experience, and contact information for at least two references. Candidates are encouraged to reach out to Dr. Matt Livesey and/or Dr. James Alix for informal discussions about the project prior to application.
