Research Area

  • Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs)
  • Multi-hazard modelling (earthquakes, landslides, floods)

Location

University of Twente, Netherlands

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Academic background in Earth sciences or quantitative sciences (physics, mathematics, engineering) with a strong affinity for Earth sciences.
  • Experience in mathematical modeling or neural network architectures.
  • Familiarity with partial differential equations (PDEs) and their numerical solution methods is desirable.

Description

Natural hazards such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides pose significant risks, often occurring in interconnected scenarios that are complex to model. Traditional numerical methods face limitations in multi-hazard scenarios. This project aims to overcome those limitations by leveraging PINNs to accurately simulate and predict these interactions, enhancing real-time disaster management and early warning systems. The role involves embedding the governing equations of physical processes into neural networks to capture nonlinear behaviors and the effects of multiple hazards working in tandem.
