Description

The red handfish, endemic to south-eastern Tasmania, is critically endangered. This research project seeks to fill gaps in knowledge about its biological and ecological needs, particularly regarding its reproductive strategies. The successful applicant will conduct controlled laboratory experiments and observational studies focusing on:

  1. Behavioural ecology and habitat complexity.
  2. Mate detection and genetic relatedness.
  3. Reproductive behaviour, courtship, and maternal care.
  4. Determining sexual maturity and breeding management.

The project aims to inform effective conservation strategies, improve captive breeding protocols, and contribute to re-stocking efforts for the red handfish population.
