PhD Position: Prokaryotic Argonaute Proteins: A PhD position is available in the research group of Dr. Daan C. Swarts at the Laboratory of Biochemistry, Wageningen University, The Netherlands. This research focuses on the function, mechanisms, and evolution of prokaryotic Argonaute proteins, which play a crucial role in protecting prokaryotic hosts against viruses and plasmids. The project is supported by an NWO M2 grant and involves collaboration with Dr. Chirlmin Joo (TU Delft). The selected candidate will work in an international, multidisciplinary, and vibrant research environment with access to state-of-the-art infrastructure for protein biochemistry research.

Study Area
The research focuses on the function, mechanisms, and evolution of prokaryotic Argonaute proteins, which use small nucleic acid guides to recognize and neutralize invading DNA. The study integrates biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, and microbiology to uncover new insights into Argonaute proteins and their accessory proteins.
Scholarship Description
The selected PhD candidate will be part of a highly motivated research team consisting of three PhD candidates, two PostDocs, and Dr. Daan C. Swarts. The project involves interdisciplinary techniques, including protein biochemistry, structural biology, single-molecule biophysics, and bacterial genetics. The candidate will closely collaborate with Dr. Chirlmin Joo (TU Delft) to explore Argonaute functions at a molecular level.
Eligibility
Required Qualifications:
- MSc degree in biochemistry, structural biology, microbiology, or a related field
- Strong background in protein biochemistry
- High motivation and a strong drive to develop as a scientist
- Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
Preferred but not mandatory:
- Experience in protein purification (FPLC, ÄKTA systems)
- Experience in structural biology techniques (X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM)
- Familiarity with fluorescence spectroscopy techniques
- Experience in bacterial genetics/virology (mutant construction, bacteriophage experiments)
Required Documents
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Cover Letter detailing motivation and research interests
