Research Area

  • Carbon neutrality and sustainable fuel production
  • Conversions of CO₂ and waste plastics into chemicals
  • Quantum Mechanics-based atomistic simulations
  • Reaction mechanisms over catalyst surfaces

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Achieved or predicted first-class or upper second-class undergraduate honours degree in Chemical Engineering/Chemistry or an equivalent qualification at Master’s level.
  • Experience in Computational Modelling using Density Functional Theory on reaction mechanisms is advantageous.

Description

This PhD project aims to address the challenge of achieving carbon neutrality by examining alternative raw materials, such as biomass and waste plastics. The research focuses on developing a carbon mapping strategy for converting CO₂ and plastics into sustainable fuels and chemicals, employing both modeling and experimental validation techniques. As part of a UKRI funded Future Leader Fellowship, the studentship offers the opportunity to collaborate with PDRAs, other PhD students, and academics while also engaging in national and international conferences. Internally, students will work towards obtaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Research Development to enhance their skills and career prospects.
