Positions in Sustainable Agriculture: The Sustainable Agriculture, Food, and Environment Systems (SAFES) Lab led by Assistant Professor Jikai Zhao at the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Kansas State University, is inviting applications for one Postdoctoral Researcher and one fully-funded PhD student position. The positions focus on biomanufacturing of platform chemicals and functional materials from biomass through microbial fermentation and catalytic synthesis.

The Postdoc position is full-time, immediately available for one year (renewable up to two additional years). The PhD position is fully funded with stipend and tuition for four years, beginning Fall 2026.

Eligibility / Qualification
Postdoctoral Position
- Ph.D. in Biological/Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Agricultural Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Strong theoretical background and research experience in biomass bioconversion, fermentation, catalysis, and sugar isomerization.
PhD Position
- M.S. in Biological/Chemical Engineering, Food Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or a closely related engineering field.
- Strong theoretical background and research experience in biomass bioconversion, fermentation, catalysis, and sugar isomerization.
Preferred Qualifications (for both positions):
- Strong publication record
- Motivation and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Job Description
The Postdoc and PhD roles include:
- Conducting independent research in biomass-based biomanufacturing.
- Developing scholarly manuscripts and conference presentations.
- Mentoring students and managing laboratory activities.
- Assisting in identifying funding sources and drafting grant proposals.
- Engaging in education and extension activities.
- Performing other research-related and educational tasks as required.
