PhD Scholarship in Environmental Chemistry: Umeå University is offering a PhD position in Chemistry with a specialization in Environmental Chemistry. The research will focus on the fate of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) during thermochemical conversion of biomass and industrial waste materials. Eligibility/Qualification

  • Completed second-cycle degree (or 240 ECTS credits) or equivalent education.
  • At least 90 ECTS credits in first-cycle courses in Chemistry or relevant field.
  • Very good command of the English language (written and spoken).

Additional Qualifications

  • Training/experience in Environmental Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Combustion Chemistry, or Organic Chemistry.
  • Strong interest in thermal processes using biomass and waste fractions.
  • Interpersonal and collaborative skills, independence, drive, and problem-solving capabilities.

Description

This PhD project aims to understand the persistence, bioaccumulation, and degradation pathways of PFAS during thermochemical valorization processes, including pyrolysis and gasification. Research will be conducted in collaboration with TNO, using lab-scale setups and real waste feedstocks to assess the potential presence of PFAS in process outputs.
