Research Area
Projects should focus on the development or improvement of methods/technologies with potential for broader service application in the life sciences. Key areas include:
- Data and Computational Science: Bioinformatics, AI/ML, computational modelling, software engineering, data management.
- Imaging and Optical Engineering: Imaging analysis, optical engineering, microscopy, detector development.
- Structural Biology and Mechanical Engineering: Automation, high-precision mechanics, robotics, microfluidics, X-ray crystallography.
- Biotechnology: (Bio)chemical engineering, chemistry, or omics technologies.
Location
EMBL operates across six sites: Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton (near Cambridge), Hamburg, Grenoble, and Rome.
Eligibility/Qualification
- Degree: A PhD at the time of the call deadline (September 30, 2026). Researchers who have successfully defended their thesis but haven’t received the formal degree are eligible.
- Background: University degree in a relevant STEM discipline.
- Experience: Demonstrated experience in technology development (academia or industry).
- Skills: Strong research potential, ability to work independently and in collaborative settings, excellent communication skills in English, and strong organizational abilities.
Job Description
As an ARISE2 Fellow, you will:
- Propose and conduct a 3-year research project on developing/improving technologies that serve the wider scientific community.
- Implement FAIR data management practices.
- Engage in a structured training programme covering RI professional competencies, including service provision, project/staff management, innovation, and AI.
- Complete a secondment (2-6 months) at an ARISE2 partner organization.
- Work under the supervision of an EMBL group leader, with additional support from an external co-supervisor and an academic mentor.
