PhD Position: Multiscale Modelling of Defects in Composites, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden

Study in Sweden

This is an excellent opportunity for researchers looking to join an international team at Chalmers University of Technology as part of the LEGEND Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action doctoral network. The project focuses on developing efficient computational tools to understand how material defects impact the performance of fibre-reinforced composites.

Research AreaMultiscale modelling of effects of defects in composites
LocationGothenburg, Sweden
Last Date to Apply31 August 2026

About the Research Project

The goal of this project is to make the design of damage-tolerant composite structures faster, smarter, and more reliable. You will work on creating a computational framework that bridges the gap between small-scale material defects and large-scale structural performance. This includes:

  • Developing an efficient two-scale simulation tool by combining detailed meso-scale models with adaptive shell-based macro models.
  • Enabling accurate predictions of strength, stiffness, and fracture behaviour.
  • Collaborating on secondments (totaling 6 months) at Airbus (Portugal), University of Kore (Italy), and Leonardo S.p.A. (Italy).

Eligibility & Requirements

To qualify for this position, you must meet the following mandatory criteria:

  • Education: A Master’s degree (120 credits) or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mechanics, Structural Engineering, Computational Engineering, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Physics, or a similar field.
  • Technical Skills: Documented experience in continuum mechanics, the finite element method, and the mechanics of fibre-reinforced polymers.
  • Programming: Strong skills in programming and numerical methods.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Mobility Rule: You must not have resided, worked, or studied in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the date of recruitment.
  • Status: You must not already hold a doctoral degree.

Knowledge in computational homogenisation or micro/mesoscale modelling is considered a strong advantage.

Job Description & Benefits

  • Duration: 4-year fixed-term appointment (extendable up to 4.5 years with teaching).
  • Responsibilities: Conduct research, publish scientific papers, attend international conferences/training events, and teach (up to 10% of time).
  • Compensation: Highly competitive salary in accordance with MSCA regulations, including:
    • Living Allowance: €5,012/month (adapted to Sweden).
    • Mobility Allowance: €710/month.
    • Family Allowance: €495/month (if applicable).
    • Chalmers guarantees a starting salary of at least 35,725 SEK.
