Research Area

Development of novel photonic integrated solid-state lasers for quantum systems and metrology applications.

The Photonics Research Group (associated with imec) conducts advanced research in:

  • Silicon(-nitride) nanophotonics.
  • Heterogeneous laser integration and micro-transfer printing.
  • Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) for quantum optics and metrology.
  • Near-infrared and mid-infrared biomedical applications.

Eligibility & Qualifications

  • Education: A thesis-based PhD degree is mandatory.
  • Expertise: Candidates should have a strong background in photonics, specifically related to laser systems, fabrication, or optical design.

Job Description

The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team led by Prof. Kasper Van Gasse. The role involves an approximate 50/50 split between clean room activity and design/characterization. Responsibilities include:

  • Fabrication: Developing novel fabrication methods for solid laser waveguides, including e-beam lithography, dry-etch optimization, and thin-film development.
  • Design & Modeling: Performing optical simulations (using Lumerical, FDTD, mode solvers, etc.) for PIC narrow linewidth CW lasers and femtosecond lasers.
  • Characterization: Testing and measuring on-chip solid-state lasers within the specialized LASIQ laser lab.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted exclusively through the online e-recruitment system. Please ensure your application includes:

  1. CV: Combined with a transcript of your academic record (PDF).
  2. Cover Letter: (PDF).
  3. Diploma: A copy of the required PhD degree (with translation if not in English, Dutch, French, or German).

Note: Files must not exceed 10 MB each.
