Research Area

All research fields supported at ISTA are eligible (see ISTA Research). Projects must be cross-disciplinary and co-supervised by two group leaders from different disciplines. If specific interdisciplinary expertise is required for your proposed research but is not available at ISTA, an external secondary supervisor can be proposed, allowing for a secondment of up to three months per fellowship year.

Eligibility/Qualification

• Education: Applicants must have been awarded their PhD at the time of recruitment (i.e., within 8 months of the application deadline). Successful applicants must hold their PhD before commencing the fellowship.
• Experience: Candidates should preferably have acquired their first postdoctoral experience and/or interdisciplinary training. However, the selection panel will also consider exceptionally promising candidates who fall outside these criteria.
• Internal Candidates: Internal applicants must not have been employed at ISTA before January 1, 2026.
• Availability: Following the initial evaluation, top-ranked candidates must be available for a remote interview approximately 8-10 weeks after the submission deadline.
• Timeline: If selected, the fellowship must commence within six months of notification.

Job Description

• Develop and execute a cross-discipline project proposal that demonstrates flexibility, creativity, and collaboration.
• Conduct independent basic research under the dual mentorship of two group leaders from different scientific disciplines.
• Utilize cutting-edge, state-of-the-art resources, including scientific service units, alongside dedicated research and travel funds.
• Engage in an open, collaborative, and interdisciplinary research environment while participating in career development support and leadership training.
• Teaching within ISTA is encouraged (but not strictly required) to foster an environment conducive to knowledge transfer.
• Join and actively participate in the global networks of exceptional pioneering researchers at both ISTA and the NOMIS Foundation.
